The Legal Fight Is Over
The last challenge to the Boy Scouts of America bankruptcy settlement ended on January 14, 2026, when the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case. Less than a month later, on February 11, roughly $1.65 billion held in escrow during the appeals was released, unlocking the largest portion of the $2.46 billion Scouting Settlement Trust.
About 82,209 abuse claims were filed before the November 2020 deadline, making this the largest sexual abuse settlement in U.S. history by claim count. For survivors, the question has shifted from whether the trust would pay to how fast.
Where Payments Stand
As of May 14, 2026, the trust reported more than 60,575 claim determinations and 42,117 approved payments totaling over $808 million. That is a sharp acceleration from late January, when about $316 million had been paid.
The key mechanic to understand is that the trust pays in staged, pro-rata distributions, not one check per survivor. Allowed claims have so far received a combined amount equal to roughly 4.7 percent of their determined award values, and additional distribution rounds are expected as remaining escrow disputes resolve and insurance contributions land. In practice, many survivors will receive multiple partial payments spread over several years rather than a single lump sum.
What a Multi-Year Payout Stream Means for Planning
A payment stream that arrives in unpredictable waves is hard to plan around. Some survivors will use each distribution as it comes. Others, particularly those with immediate needs like housing, medical care, or debt, feel the gap between what they have been awarded on paper and what has actually arrived.
Trust distributions themselves are not structured settlement annuities, and they are not something this site purchases. But some survivors have chosen, or will choose, to place settlement money into structured settlements or annuities for long-term security. If you hold payments like that and your situation changes down the road, they can generally be sold in whole or in part through a court-approved transfer, with a judge confirming the sale is in your best interest. Our guide to how selling settlement payments works explains the process step by step.
What to Watch
Two numbers tell the story from here: the cumulative amount paid, which the trust updates publicly, and the percentage of determined award values distributed to allowed claims, which signals how deep into the payment waves the trust has gotten. With the escrow released and determinations moving quickly, 2026 should be the biggest payment year so far.
